Edinburgh – A World Class Education

Scotland’s capital boasts many of the country’s best schools, several world-class universities and prestigious research institutions.  Edinburgh established the first Scottish university in 1583 and, since then, has educated some very famous sons including Sir Walter Scott, Charles Darwin, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Tony Blair!

The full range of educational needs is catered for across both state and independent sectors.

Primary Schools

For primary education, Edinburgh is divided into a system of ‘catchment’ areas. From your postal  address a decision will be made about the level of priority you will be given for your preferred school.  (You can express a preference for a local school of your choice which the Council will attempt to meet where it can).

Enrolment usually begins in November of the year prior to when you child is due to start school and allocation of places is usually made in the Spring of the following year.   If you arrive in Edinburgh after that date your child may be placed on a waiting list.  Priority is given to children within the catchment area and those with siblings already attending that school

Secondary Schools

The system of allocation for secondary schools is similar to that of primary ie is based on catchment areas.  Again, you can express a preference for a particular school.  It’s important to note, however, that if your child has been allocated a primary place at a school outwith a particular catchment area, when it’s time to transfer to secondary the place that will be reserved will be at a secondary school determined by your actual address  (rather than being the secondary school that automatically feeds from that particular primary school).

Since the choice of secondary school is vital in helping your child reach his or her full potential, it’s important to make the best choice within the options that are available to you.  Remember that before choosing a school/expressing a preference you can personally visit any school you’re interested in, see the facilities, meet key personnel and find out just what they have to offer your child.  Just give them a ring!.

The Independent Sector

The Independent schools sector in Edinburgh has an enviable reputation.  The City’s dozen or so private schools are amongst the best performing in the country.  A variety of abilities and income levels are represented and approximately 20% of pupils receive some financial assistance.  Ethnicity is diverse, with children from all around the globe represented.   The Scottish Council of Independent Schools is produces a directory of Independent Scottish schools every October.  On their website you can read a profile of each school including number of pupils, what exams they offer and how much it costs.  Alternatively you could just contact each school directly for a prospectus and an admissions pack.  Again you are welcome to visit schools and talk to pupils or staff or you can attend organised Open Days.
